Sometime protagonists do ruthless things but it's more an exception than a rule. And almost invariably the net result of their actions is positive, even if they are stated to be evil.

Think I heard somewhere that even that one doesn't deviate from this, in that the light novel eventually reveals that

none of the items can actually create romantic feelings, only encourage them or make it harder for the person to deny them. Meaning every girl in his harem liked him from the start, but his devices forced through any moral or psychological barriers that were keeping them from just straight-up offering themselves to him.
