Actually, we have not seen Shanks fighting at all. Don't even know how strong he is. However, if the World Goverment is having a close eye on Shanks and his crew, that means, he is one hell of a pirate in the Grand Line. And his relationship with Whitebeard suggests that he is up there among the strongest pirates or something like that. I would love to see Shanks fight though.
and isn't the pirate king's name Gol D. Roger(Skypie Arc's confirmed)(people probably mistook the name and call him GolD Roger).
