I don't think you can call them "newbie". Shizuno, Ako and Kuro have played mahjong for a long time (2 years+ at least). They have Harue, the ex-inter-high player and Achiga Ace player who have experience in National competition as their teacher and they also have an experience to play with Nodoka, who is currently the Middle-school champion. (in Saki)
From those points, you can expect that their skill in Mahjong will be quite good.
