Tsundere characters usually have redeeming features. Naru Narusegawa could be sweet and nice when she let her guard down. Motoko Aoyama moved a bit too much towards comic relief sometimes, but she slowly learned to embrace her femininity somewhat and sometimes demonstrated her vulnerability. Akane Tendo seemed to be nice to everyone except Ranma Saotome. Haruhi Suzumiya is annoying, but she had her occasional semi-selfless moments, such as when she attempted to help ENOZ out during the school festival. And, in his own way, Kyon was able to influence her and make sure she didn't quite always get her way. Kirino has thanked Kyousuke grudgingly once. With her, each time we peel away a layer of coldness and hostility, we're met with another layer and coldness and hostility. It's like some nesting doll of bitchiness.

My question is, why does he need a reason? Some people just do things because they think it's the right thing to do you know.

Because of practicality? If you invest time and effort into trying to fix someone's life up and all they do is continue to screw up, learning nothing in the process, and treat you like crap on top of it all, it's hardly a healthy situation for you in the long run. At some point, it's time to cut your losses and let the ungrateful bastards drown.

Um, no, that's not the problem. There's nothing necessarily wrong in a magical girl stopping a friend who's turned evil no matter what it takes. My problem was not that she killed her friend, it was that she killed her friend WITH A BIG SMILE ON HER FACE! Even if she's gone to the dark side, or BECAUSE she has, any character in any genre should show anger, confusion, sadness, tears flowing at the fact that they have to kill someone they love. A character should NOT be happy about killing her friend. Not to mention her battle smile is rather sadistic, as seen right before she destroys an entire metropolis.

Agreed about the psychopathic streak. As for stopping a friend no matter what it takes, in magical girl anime, it rarely ends with the death of said friend and, as you correctly said, certainly wouldn't be a source of glee for the protagonist.

Honestly, Stardust Witch Meruru sounds like a crappy anime.
