I think it's too early to tell if he's a good leader or not. Yes, he left his village, but at the same token it appears that he didn't completely foresake them. He began remembering his mission with naruto on the bridge and so forth. He left, because he felt at the time he wasn't getting strong enough to defeat his brother. So if he assembles a team for a specific goal, then how can we say he's a bad leader? We haven't even seen him in a leadership position. Last I checked he was subordinate to Kakashi, then to Oro. Now he is making his own team. It's too early to judge his leadership capabilities.
