Just to elaborate on this, Saddam ran a secular regime, which I believe was the only significant non-Israeli one in the Middle East. Bin Laden's vision has always been one of countries in which Islamic law is strictly applied, in complete contrast to the relative religious freedom allowed in Iraq under Saddam.
The 9/11 team consisted of Saudis and Yemenese. The only significant known government contact of Al-Qaeda, (besides their well known friendship with the Taleban), is (or was) a close relationship with the Saudi royal family. But then the Saudis are American allies, so that exempts them from any blame, right?
I believe that in fact, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, Al-Qaeda made an offer to the Saudis to get rid of Saddam for them.
