Then that would imply that they were idiots for choosing it in the first place.
If it was removed, I think the explanation is more towards the impact on the ending. It could have killed Kallen x Lelouch, or it could have bolstered it. We don't know but it could have had a large affect on the ending's level of ambiguity.
