And the Fourth Pretty Cure is close approaching...
Spoiler for Episode 22: Setsuna and Love, Are You Eas!?:
My apologies. It turned out that Eas's story-arc is not resolved in four episodes but five, hence, the fourth Pretty Cure (with no suspense involved) appears on the next one, episode twenty-three.
It really went bad for me having watched and finished HeartCatch before concluding Fresh, because the former's high quality is burdening on me whenever I'm keeping watching new episodes of the latter.
To be honest, I'm quickly grew bored and became annoyed about Love's over-the-top, happy-to-goody, sugary-coated optimism. Jeez, she'll be as vexxing if not more than Nozomi from YPC5 at later episodes.
Second, Setsuna/Eas's pain and willful sacrifice doesn't wake any sympathy and empathy from me due to her narrow-minded, zealous, fanaticism towards Möebius. Absolutely nothing was disclosed about Eas regarding her past background at Labyrinth, and possible insecurities and fears she might have had before learning about Möebius's existence.
The old-school, Pretty Cure formula (representative from the first classic series to Splash*Star) was abandoned by TOEI once the Yes! Pretty Cure 5 started.
Eas/Setsuna is so terribly one-dimensional, unlike, Splash*Star's Michiru and Kaoru because while treating her mission to find ways to weaken the Pretty Cure with utmost seriousness they unknowingly interacted frequently with their enemie's environments starting to question themselves about the past, sad lives, as they naturally grew accustomed to the warmth that environment provided.
And the Goddess of Love said, let Passion be borned....
Spoiler for Episode 23: The End of Eas! Cure Passion is Born!!:
So, Fresh Pretty Cure finally reached the most anticipated event that many fans of this series were looking for: the birth of Cure Passion.
My thoughts for this episode were that I do praise the efforts in the narrative and the characters' actions. Rather than engaging Eas/Setsuna with sweet talk, Peach opted to convey her feelings through their fight, even though the match was vicious. However, it served the purpose for Setsuna to release and relief all her accumulated anger, and for her to express without inhibitions and shame that all along she was jealous of Love's overly kind and innocent nature.
The blow for dramatic effect came immediately as Möebius had Klein to expire Eas's life before Love's incredulous and astonished face, since mending their relationship together both were about to reach their hands.
However, as it is common in this type of genre created by TOEI, Chiffon pulled out Deus Ex Machina to call for Akarun, merging within Eas's body. In that way, Setsuna emotionally contacted and merged with Akarun and reborned as the fourth Pretty Cure, that all girls plus Tarte have been looking for: Cure Passion.
The good call is that Cure Passion could not join the current Pretty Cure Trio due to remorse for all the misdeeds of her previous persona, much to Love's sorrow.
The bad news is that Passion's introduction, to my taste, came off as one of many sweetly-lame moments. It is just that when characters switch sides, in Pretty Cure, they immediately hold adverse and hostile feelings against their former comrades.
In this case, for Pretty Cure universes, characters unilaterally change sides towards good and not vice-versa.
Let's be fair honest, Kaoru and Michiru's: change of heart, rebirth, and subsequent changing of sides in Splash*Star packed more emotional punch, was more logically constructed, and the drama became one of many beautiful moments in the Pretty Cure franchise.
Finally, I spoiled myself about Setsuna becoming Cure Passion when I watched first the Fresh Pretty Cure film last year. So, her rebirth as a Cure for this episode did not ring any new bells on me.
The family that leaves you behind a light to follow...
