The conversation between the students at the aquarium was telling, especially when it came to the topic of the Red-colored sea. Remember the first series? The sea was normal-colored, and only really turned red after End of EVA. Kaworu's little line at the end posits that, if anything, we're actually watching part of a cycle.

The old Timeline no longer applies, so it's no use utilizing it as a comparison.

And I still think whining about an EYEPATCH is silly.
