His jealousy and envy warped his purpose, but deep down he did want to save his people and free his country. Yeah, he did horrible things, but holding a grudge against him for that is exactly what the story warns you against.

I suppose that's the underlying reason Cassim's character got so inextricably connected to Alibaba. The series' overall message is right there: if you're not willing to forgive you won't save anyone.

Just look at Hakuryuu. Her mother is certainly a bitch of astronomic proportions, and you could say Haku has the right to hate her. Yet, the story still asks for him to let go of his grudge.
