Just watched it the other night at Imax, in 3D. The visuals were breathtaking. They were really good. When it first sorta glided you through the trees I got that downhill roller coaster feeling. It took me awhile to settle in because we sat too far forward, but once I did I was immersed. I couldn't tell if the avatars were actors heavily modified with CG and make up, or if they were entirely CG. Can anyone clarify?

The plot isn't very good though. I didn't really like any of the characters (except the colonel, but that's probably because he's the closest thing to something badass in the movie. Maybe I'm just a retard that way), they were pretty standard archetypes. (including the colonel >_>)

I didn't really like the ending. I really thought that going into the avatar was some form of escapism, so him going permanently into the avatar body left a bad taste in my mouth. I thought the random ability to transport a soul to a new body was a convenient device so it doesn't make Jake look like a delusional marine who enjoys his fantasy life with the natives. Yes, they are real (in the setting of this movie), but I couldn't shake the feeling that to Jake they were more like a dream. He never actually had contact with them other than that one time near the end. The romance between Jake and the native woman(forget her name) was kind of a waste of my time. Overall, the plot in this one was kind of kiddy and simple compared to some of his other movies.

As a side note, I went wtf when the colonel pulled out that giant combat knife for his mecha lol. I did not see it coming. And it kind of amused me how he did the slow-mo jump stab thing twice, once on the beast the woman was riding, and once on Jake, although he missed.
