While that COULD be a reasoning behind it, considering that they're not just fighting against regular human type sized enemies, there could be plenty of motivation to bring something with a heavier round.

The transition to lighter assault rifle rounds happened under the context that

-An unarmored man hit by 5.56mm NATO is just as likely to be made a casualty as one hit by 7.62mm NATO
and
-Modern firefights are often determined by volume of suppression fire than aimed shots.
