I don't know if I would go so far as to say that Love Hina was potentially dark, I will note that it did have the ability to go from dead serious in one panel to slapstick comedy in another, without really losing the reader's interest. The way the story is written, is so that the reader can apparently understand either plot device to be an honest interpretation of how the characters move and think within the world that is Love Hina.
