I thought the flashback arc was pretty boring as well as the blache (first arc) but the 2nd arc (9 schools competition) and 3rd (chinese invasion) were pretty interesting imo. That, and I'd think the characters are pretty interesting as well
I hear the majority of the complaints for TL are the technicalities like with magic & whatnot so if you're looking for experience with the irritating, this would be a good series.
Though what do you mean by a "wide gap" to jump?
Densetsu no Yusha no Densetsu's also pretty cool if you wanna take a look into that.

The whole mastermind, rich powerful families with great influence is stuff I'll prefer to avoid, but it depends, I'll have to try reading it but too lazy for now.
A lot of terms, technical terms to boot, I'll have to be able to search completely in Japanese.
