You know, I wrote this a while back... when I was upset that AruSherri fans kept irritating me (no one here on the board but on YT) about my AruRan videos (when did we no longer become a free country?) and decided to pull a bunch of shit which got me copyrighted by YouTube. Someone wrote a small amount of information, and I think it was "Westlo" in response to BleachOD about his words towards the SnT movie (and I agree with a lot of irritations towards it too). Westlo actually bashed Ranka's character and I felt like replying.
Keep in mind that this is a bit old but some of it still holds context. And, also, I was mad at the time, so if it seems like I'm bashing AruSherri, don't take offense.
Spoiler for TV series vs. movies:
1.Ranka is a misunderstood character. Most AruSherri fans, like yourself, choose to just push her outside of Frontier altogether and say she isn't a character that belongs in this anime. Well, let's take a look back at a character who DIDN'T belong in a certain anime and won: Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha. She was one of those BIG "in the wrong anime" characters, but look at how far past Kikyou (her rival in love and the person who first had Inuyasha's heart) she'd gotten in terms of personality and cherishing those dear to her. She GREW. And Ranka is the same.
The part that AruSherri fans love to push on her is that she chose to leave with Brera in Ep.21. Oh yes, let's totally fuck up the fact SDF-1 said they wanted the same thing with the Zentradi in Macross: peace. Let's take into account how similar the Zentradi and Vajra are: built for war, meant to destroy all in their path, and are moved by songs. How much closer can we GET to Macross? Ranka does the same thing that SDF-1 did: try to create peace. The fact is: she tries to do it by herself because everyone aboard Frontier BELIEVES Mishima's lies. So she ends up getting written off as a "foolish character" for having such a brave heart to chase her ideals. Thank you for fucking her character up for others who watch this series, AruSherri fans; we really fucking hate you for it. So before you even bother to respond to that, tell me, what is Frontier off doing? Trying to kill the Vajra whilst getting themselves killed, all for the sake of a few ROCKS! The fold quartz they might not even live to achieve. So who makes better sense now: the girl trying to save Frontier or the government trying to get everyone on Frontier killed? I think Ranka makes better sense, don't you? So, before you bash her character again, remember that you'll be bashing all of SDF-1's efforts that created the Macross you're watching now with your so-called "beloved" Sheryl.
She understood that Alto cherished Frontier. So saying she wanted Alto to go with her didn't mean she'd MAKE him do so. Ranka let him decide. She gave him her final farewell, knowing she might never see him again. However, Sheryl had the gall to MAKE him do things for her, even when he didn't want to or expressed hatred towards it. And in the end, Ranka's attitude is what helped her win his heart every time. She was giving and caring to the people she cherished most. Just because she didn't go all emo like in Ep.3 every time someone got injured did NOT mean they weren't important to her! It just helped to show how much she'd grown. Honestly, how shallow can AruSherri fans get to not notice a character's heart when it's laid right in front of them?
2.The triangle in the TV series was one-sided the whole time. THAT became very clear when Kawamori animated quite a LOT of Hikaru and Misa's scenes together with AruRan moments. The only true Misa scene that Sheryl got was similiar to DYRL, which isn't even canon, by the way. The girl whom Alto spoke to first in Ep.1 (which OD nicely pointed out) was RANKA, and in SDF-1, that was the winner. He only SAW Sheryl, he never spoke to her. He formed a bond with Ranka first and then Sheryl.
And, this part makes me laugh, people love to state that Ranka is Minmei. She isn't. Honestly, BOTH girls have a LOT of Minmei's personality. But Ranka gets more of Minmei's stage attire and symbols, like working at Nyan-Nyan. But the only scene she got that was truly a Minmei was Ep.1's rescue scene. The rest of the time, you see Sheryl getting Minmei's scenes. And when you look at Minmei's personality in BOTH realities, it matches SHERYL. Sheryl got the bitchier and excessively whiny side of Minmei. Ranka got Minmei's personality from DYRL's second half, when Minmei came to realize she had feelings for Hikaru, except Ranka felt this EARLIER than Minmei, right during Ep.5. Meanwhile, Sheryl's feelings didn't develop until Minmei's in SDF-1, after Alto had developed feelings for Ranka instead. Up until then, she was playing around with him, just like Minmei. So, therefore, logically, SHERYL is the one who gets dumped.
Also, Alto's actions with both girls near the end of the series is the same as Hikaru's towards the end of Macross: he dedicates himself to Misa but still sees Minmei on the side. Same with Ranka and Sheryl. But, the biggest thing that AruSherri fans fail to realize is Sheryl's final talk to Alto before the big battle is a mirror image of Minmei's final moment in DYRL. Alto's final actions to rescue Ranka mirrored when Hikaru went to rescue Misa on Earth's base before the Zentradi attack. Once again, it becomes a play-by-play of the original Macross. Ranka gets Misa's ending and Sheryl remains Minmei until Kawamori finally ends his Minmei obsession with SnT's ending. At least Minmei finally got her lover.
3.That WAS her rejection scene. It mirrored TWO scenes of Minmei's from Macross and DYRL: Hikaru telling Minmei he loves her but can't be with her, and Minmei choosing to sing for the sake of the ship's and its people's survival, even knowing she was rejected. Both scenes are rejection scenes and only SHERYL got them. When Ranka was so-called "rejected," Alto chased after her, which Hikaru didn't in DYRL. So there is proof in the pudding right there. Another good Hikaru/Misa moment for AruRan was Ep.17. Alto expresses he feels like a "cheating husband" and enters her room, apologizing for being late. This mirrors a scene from Macross when Hikaru has a date with Misa and goes to visit Minmei instead, ending up late to his date and apologizing for it.
If you actually watched Ep.24 back, you'd realize it's not "I'll see my lover off for the big battle" at all. Her very words "whatever it is... I know I won't be able to sing" mirror Minmei's words "I'll sing my very best.. for their sake" in DYRL. If you watch Macross and then jump into Frontier, you actually notice that Sheryl's character growth stops and falls backwards after Ep.15 whilst Ranka's keeps on going until she realizes that what Frontier has been doing up until then is wrong. Ranka does what Sheryl taught her in Ep.3: takes control of her destiny. Meanwhile, Sheryl falls from that and doesn't come back up, instead, she becomes a TOOL. So, for those of you who want to disregard Ranka's actions, THINK about that for a moment.
Oh, Ranka, you are more misunderstood than Alto...
And, if you really thing about it, Macross Frontier has a lot of iconic scenes that lead me to believe that the TV series was meant to mirror SDF-1 and DYRL's ending with Hikaru/Misa by putting Alto/Ranka in due to the fact that most AruRan scenes were similar to that of Hikaru/Misa from SDF-1. In the movies, Kawamori breaks the cycle of the dynamic trio from SDF-1 by having a Hikaru/Minmei ending with Alto/Sheryl, thus ending ending his obsession with Minmei. But that's only if you look at the fact that Alto and Sheryl get 90% more Hikaru/Misa scenes in the movies than they ever did in the series.
