39 episodes probably wouldn't cut it for a remake.
Fullmetal Alchemist is 27 volumes long, and the 2009 anime felt too rushed at many points even though it was 64 episodes in length. In comparison, Rurouni Kenshin is 28 volumes long. I'd say 73 episodes would likely be an ideal length for a remake.
