Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of Persona 3's MC. In fact, the whole thing with building relationships with those zodiac girls just screams "Social Link" to me. Even the menu and dungeon designs look like they were ripped straight from the latter Persona titles. That being said, maybe Atlus could localize this game by simply labeling it "Persona Gaiden" or something.
