One thing that just came to mind:
In Japan, isn't it fairly common to look down on fellow students because of their family circumstances? While the other students usually do not display open hostility or disdain for someone who is from a poor or dysfunctional family, they do distance themselves from that student.
It seems everyone in the class knows that Tama is taking care of her little sisters. Presumably they also know that their mother is deceased. They openly joke about it and do not seem to care at all, and nor does Tama try to hide it. Perhaps it is because they do not know that her father is an underemployed struggling artist? Or is it because they are a shrine family?
