Oh, you're right. Things begin to make more sense. The rods sticking out of that one "sun" would likely be more evidence of that.
So, what we're seeing at the start are some finished spheres (that look like planets), and one sphere that's still in the process of being built.

But, remember, the operator called that one sphere, "Sphere No. 1", which indicates there are multiple spheres, or why bother numbering them?
Also, getting back to size and gravity, I just realized they're on the inside of the spheres, not the outside. Presumably they are spinning the spheres to generate gravity? Which would also suggest the "sky" we see later on at night is an artificial image on the dome surface of their habitat.
