it means that we will probably never get a resolution to what happened with Alto in the second movie. I know I sound quite negative on that, but it seems we'll have another Misa/Hikaru; Sara/Shin couple. That doesn't exactly inspire much confidence in the next Macross project, if so many of the couples get shipped off into "never hear from us again" land by Kawamori.
AND it serves to reinforce the notion that the guy really lacks fantasy in how to end a romance, since that makes three "disappeared into the nether" and four "bittersweet" endings by him. >.<
