I like what they do in episode 13 with Kodai and Sanada. It was a matter that had to be adressed. In the original Kodai is made deputy captain by Okita but there was no XO in that show. Here we have Sanada which, as XO, is the de facto deputy captain. Something had to be set up for Sanada, who i've always seen as someone who has the XO position but only cause he has to, to pass the torch to Kodai. Here he sees the spark of command in him, that comparisson with Okita shows just that. I'm only guessing but i think had he not been killed at Pluto, as Tactical Officer, Kodai (Mamoru) would have been the XO instead of Sanada, which is one more reason for him to step aside. Am i making any sense here? XD

Basically, yes. More importantly, Sanada realizes that he made a decision based on Intelligence Officer Niimi's influence over him; and that it was the wrong action to take — revealing the Yamato's position — while Kodai's suggestion (as Tactical Officer) was correct all along.
