I'll side with matradley on this one... your PC is most likely having a resource problem or a an overload problem... depends on your prefered point of view. When you extensively use the swap file of the system and it cleans several gigabytes of swapped data this can take a while (and of course the red light will be on when this is done). Usually happens with very memory hungry programs/cluttered up systems.
