This sort of things happens a lot when you mix Windows and an internet connection--not because of something entering the system secretly, but because of the very things the user does. So, yes, it's normal if you don't control yourself with what you download. Installing lots of programs and having them run at the same time (which happens an awful lot on XP with those damn startup programs) can drain out your PC in very little time.
