It makes more sense.
For drill instructor I was thinking of an Army drill instructor/trainer, nothing to do with refining/producing/synthesizing products.
It sounds like his issue in the early chapters was simply thinking inside the box too much. He was not applying modern information and technique to his ability, he was simply copying what was done there.
Also sounds like Shirasaki Kaori was impressed with his moral courage, the willingness to take a beating for others, compared to the more common to her physical courage which might be more common to her, knowing the other 2 guys in her group.
