You are supposed to get the same knowledge the detective has, so unless the detective can read minds and thus knows the culprits thoughts you are generally better off not showing what the culprit has on mind.

That is the standard, but no, it doesn't necessarily have to work this way. Even in completely default detective mysteries, narrating from a different perspective can fill the reader in on details that the detective already knows but would be hard to put into the story from the detective's perspective. For example, in Umineko no Naku Koro ni, it's common knowledge that the parents are all in serious need of money. But the scene is told from the perspective of the parents with the other characters (including detective) being absent, because you'd really have to twist the story in a weird direction to get the parents to tell Battler about their money problems.

But there's nothing even wrong with the reader knowing information the detective doesn't. The important thing is that the detective must not know anything the reader doesn't know. The reader can receive any number of additional hints (they're not a master detective after all) (Umineko example: Rosa's explanation of how she discovered Kuwadorian (the mansion in the forest) and what happened there), as long as the detective still solves the case with hints only the detective knows.
