Seconding this recommendation. The manga is (1) much more interesting, (2) much more complex in its storyline, and (3) makes a lot more sense in its presentation. The anime jumped around the story, reordering events, and skipping major story arcs altogether. It was a real mish-mash of an effort and a worthy candidate for a reboot. Not that I think that'll happen, mind you.
