It was one character? I'm afraid I don't know who you are talking about, because I thought there were several characters used as "assassins". Care to enlighten me?
Spoiler for What I believe as the real problem with Best Moe and the only possible way to rescue it:
In my opinion, all the problems listed for Best Moe is mere superficial symptom of the root cause that was fermenting for several years before blowing its top in EARLY part of 2011 tournament. When the staff took antagonistic stance against "outsiders" who were voting in "their" tournament, especially since 2009, small bad things started to pile up, resulting in Best Moe Tournament becoming very vulnerable to what transpired from the START of the 2011 tournament. This led to the Fairy Tail incident, where whole series characters were disqualified for receiving concentrated support from a Fairy Tail Fan club, which left Best Moe without means to withstand someone who merely manipulated about 300 votes to achieve any result he wanted. Just 1 year ago, 300 vote would not have been enough for very weak, top 256 level character to sink someone in top 96. Now, Fairy Tail fan clubs made it possible for same top 256 level to beat top 32 level, and when they got booted out, top 256 level can beat up top 8 level characters with ease, if someone tries to multivote. This was the main body of the problem, where lack of voter pool leads to even more problems. Booting the problem character out was an option already used up by the time of reboot decision. IN fact, without fundamental changes, as well as bringing back fans of characters who lost in these problem matches, Best Moe would remain vulnerable. The decision to reboot, in my opinion was one of rare proper move Best Moe Staff did, since it is known that the fans of the problem characters were not the people to be blamed for the multivote. Again, multivoters used several characters, and some, he used it to beat another character, and then voted against that character as if to ridicule the people participating in it. There even was someone who posted belittling remarks about Best Moe Korean crowd whenever people expressed shock at the result. The Best Moe Staff's only viable option was to redo, since by that point, the malicious spoiler already done most of damage he set out to do with elimination of at least 5 key characters, thus accepting past result would be accepting that the guy has already won his war and Best Moe staff would be fighting a closing battle for better term of surrender. Booting out characters involved in multivoting scheme was also not an option, since the staff already did that once, which made things even worse in my opinion, and it would remove 2 other character that does have good amount of popularity, thus further reducing the fan groups that would be interested in continuing, while it would also bring question of fairness as to why only certain victims would be saved while earlier victims be ignored. Redoing was only one remaining, since that would invalidate all the victories the cheater has won, and it would also resurrect all the victims, along with hope that some of the fan groups will come back.
Thus, in my opinion, rebooting isn't the problem with KBM, it is this antagonistic relationship between the Staff and the outsiders. The result of this antagonism is what lead to the worst move of them all, ban on outside campaigning, in 2012. Removal of English support was made necessary because the staff couldn't justify the outside campaign ban while there is open door for outside Korea voters.
The fix is, of course, to remove all those bad rules and resurrect multilingual support. The only way this fix can be done is if there is sufficient outcry from international crowd, since most Korean Outsiders have been ticked off too much to bother with Best Moe anymore. If such international outcry does not come about, Best Moe can be considered dead, as it won't even be a full tournament any more, since the last published plan has it that the whole event will stop when top 10 or top 8 is determined. Sadly, I'm afraid I can no longer be part of the cure for any of the maladies of Best Moe, because anything I propose about Best Moe will be viewed in very negative light by Best Moe Staff.
As for Triple Crown, I think best choices are either new characters from second half of 2012 or strong characters getting 2nd season next year, like those from OreImo and Railgun. Since Mikoto is very well liked in Korea, with that 2nd season, Mikoto got good chance to win Best Moe, if it happens(a very big if). The question would be Saimoe, and even there Mikoto's chance isn't horrible. Kuroneko has good popularity everywhere, and with the 2nd season, do have chance to nail all 3 events at once, unless Saimoe, which ends the latest, decides to spite her and other tournament in case Kuroneko wins ISML and Best Moe. A newcomer from popular anime series like SAO may also get a shot at triple crown , though there is a chance that SAO fans might become its worst enemy as there are many popular characters within the series, which can sometimes splinter the faction .
