True that Koko has no backstory, but the thing you have to realise is:

That by making Koko confess to Yoshiyuki, they are in effect getting rid of her early on in the anime. If you've watched animes like KGNE you know that a confession early on usually never ends well... True perhaps it's not what you are expecting, but it's only the first ep and you can't expect Otome or Yume to be fighting this early on, considering they see Yoshiyuki has their brother.

Personally the first ep was extremely well done in my opinion and obviously with any sort of game adaptation, the anime writers has to try to cover all the girls and I think by making Koko confess early on is a good way to clear both Koko and Nanaka's story line early on and focus on the tension between Otome and Yume later in the anime.

You should never judge a book by it's cover and as experienced at watching as you are i'm sure, you should of realised where the show was heading with the Koko incident.
