No wonder they said "ignorance is bliss". But I like to think that ignorance is a self-shortchanging mechanism that screws up over time.

That's selling them a bit short. It just takes some coaxing for people divulge all kinds of thoughts or history or trauma. Every individual is made up of many complex interactions despite how they may present themselves. Even with many similar blocks and parts, it's amazing how differently people can turn out.
