If we go for it word for word, its pretty straightforwardly easy to fit it into "The wise man does not let himself be led astray!" as Amata was about to let himself sink into despair of thinking he was about to be abandoned again. (Why he is wrong can be interpreted many ways, since, for example, he has many other friends and its rather short sighted of him to ignore them.)
The issue with the whole set-up though is that the ending reeks of *build them up before the fall*. Amata just gets his resolve mended, his wings take him high... and then he gets shredded. Since Fudo isn't able to read the future...
