Back in season 1, I remember SHAFT used the red or black screen flashes to indicate when they were actually skipping over novel source material. In the same way, the numbered flashes denoted (I presume) skipped chapter boundaries here. This conscientious/faithful treatment of the source material, which directly acknowledges parts where the adaptation was skimped on, is something I really appreciate about SHAFT's style 'cause it lets me at least imagine what I'm missing, and show's a respect for/intertextuality with the original work.
