I own both seasons on dvd and this is my favorite anime.
Although the plot maybe not as deep as those other animes (rahxephon etc), Vandread has a very interesting storyline that is pretty innovative. The animation in the 2nd stage is a lot better than the 1st stage and the plot is better in the 2nd season too. I cried in a couple of the episodes.
