Actually I think most of her evil fame came from the past where she wasn't strong enough. She probably had to kill a lot of people to protect herself, and sometimes even because letting they get away means they would bring many more against her and she wasn't strong enough that she didn't need to care who would come as she can handle them like now.
Also by saying that she settled in a remote island when she finally was able to live by herself without needing anyone means she probably had to steal things a lot in the earlier days. There isn't many ways available for a little girl to get money, explaining her situation wasn't really an option. And even if she was able to settle somewhere with other people, she could only stay for a couple of year or so before people started wondering about her unchanging appearance.
