My hypothesis is that ramen in Japan, while recognized as a rich and respectfully complex dish, remains culturally associated with working men / salaryman, uncivilized ways of eating, and is just generally an "unfashionable" food for girls. Going in a group at least gives the impression that you're here only because of friends and that you don't care that much about the food; going alone implies that you came specifically _for_ the food, and if the food is unfashionable, you must be as well. This is in addition to the vague stigma of eating in any restaurant by yourself.
Anyway, I enjoyed the first episode. I didn't come in expecting much of a story; simply being able to listen to Ayaneru and Taketatsu talk about ramen and getting some decent humor along the way is enough for me.
