Well it explains why he is so unsure around girls some. His mom rejected him, and his sister died when he young. He never knew his grandmother, his aunts were in cold sleep and he never knew them either. His grandmother is in a people jar and never knew of her, or met her. When he finally founds out about his aunts, he must then realize he watched one of them die in front of him.
His father is dead, his grandfather apparently never really connected with him and is not really the most personable person.
