Though I didnt read the novels and neither do I understand Japanese;
1. here is a good summary of volume 4 I read on MAL:

basically they enter a small village via a large town in search for info on yoitsu's whereabouts (horo's home). there's a secret pact made between the small village and the large town, which basically exempt's the small village from taxes, in return the small village sell their extra harvest of wheat exclusively to the large town.

greedy ass people want to destroy the pact and do so by sabotaging the wheat inport (poison wheat, that naturally grows in some areas)the result is someone from the large town dies from the wheat inport, which now needs to be destroyed, which in turn will incur a large debt on the small village and so the pact will need to be destroyed. horo & lawrence find a way to prove that it was the head of the large town (bishops) that sabotaged the wheat import. this is basically the whole volume.

points that i'm too lazy to explain in detail is below:

1. they find a book with details on the monster bear that destroyed yoitsu and a bit on yoitsu... conclusion, horo's friends weren't killed by the bear but fled like pussies coz the bear was too strong. horo's happy knowing that they're alive

2. we get to see horo in her big wolf form again and a little dramatic argument between horo and lawrence... there's prob 2 or 3 cute moments of horo but that's it.

2. I did read somewhere that the way Horo speaks isn't quite the usual/modern Japanese, which should be understandable since she is the wise "600 year old" wolf, hence why she didn't use "baka" (i could imagine it would sound stupid if she did use that)
