Fan reactions to pairings can be affected by the nature of the story itself. With tightly plotted stories driving the character interactions, even if the fans don't necessarily like the pairings it is more understandable give the focused direction compared to a more freeform story. More open-ended stories increase the chances of outcomes going in different directions, so that fans would end up being more upset if an outcome isn't to their liking in that case.
