When I viewed that scene, she was basically saying "Go, fulfill your duties, and then come back to me", with an emphasis on the last part. She entrusted him with that earring for 2 purposes:
1. Go, and if you don't come back, at least keep my memory with you to the very end
2. Go, and come back safely, to me (thus the engaged part)

Tak got it right in the first option. When Sheryl gave him the earring,i think she already knows her time is almost up. So the least she can do is to make sure Alto saves Ranka and stay alive with all the "I ll tell you when you get back" trick.
