I think if Naruto were to open the gates that he would release way too much chakra and eventually the tails will come out pretty fast. Since the Kyuubi's chakra is always mixed with Naruto's chakra his body rejects it and that's why his chakra control is so bad (right?) so in this instance he'd just be letting everything take control I'm assuming?
