Oh, because they're usually converted from hard telecined NTSC... like the copy of Castle of Cagliostro I've seen. Right. Too bad that's the rule, not the exception. Most of my experience is with 24fps movies, where the PAL DVD is usually the best source. (sped up by 25/24, but much more vertical resolution than the NTSC DVD. Of course, most releases throw it all away by scaling to square pixels at <= 720 pixels wide.)
