This technique makes the user many times more fast/powerful/whatever. Now if his oponent is stronger even if he is in this gates open state ... it's not his damn fault. It boosts your stregth dramatically, but it might still not be enough to beat your oponent.
Just because Sasuke's chidori didn't defeat Gaara doesn't make it just plain stupid. It still uses up a lot of chakra, if Sasuke misses his chidori twice and is standing there without chakra ... he's going to die also.
Weather Lee is standing there with a crushed body ... or Sasuke out of stamina, with no chakra ... both will die if their oponent was almost unaffected by the attack.
