Spoiler for supplemental information from novel, not really spoiler. Just some more insights.:
Layfon does not regret what he did, at all. In fact, even after the exile, he still think what he did is right. He made it clear to Nina that even if he has the chance to start from the beginning again, he will still make the same decisions (gamble and kill Gahard) .
The anime should be mention this later on, but Gahard threatened to expose Layfon's deed if Layfon doesn't lose to him. Layfon tried to 1 hit kill Gahard in the tournament, but he failed.
He doesn't even hate Gahard. From Layfon's point of view, Gahard was doing everything he could to win, even if it means fighting dirty. If Layfon was in the same position, he probably would do the same thing.
What he did find surprising, however, is the people's reaction to his deeds. Those he sworn to protect (the children from the Orphanage) called him names and despise him, even when he did all those for them.
That's why he doesn't want to fight anymore.
