That was a very interesting first episode. First and foremost, I don't know about movie quality, but it looked pretty good overall, very solid. The soundtrack I suppose is the same from the game, and albeit seldom used, it worked quite well. The silence didn't really bother me, since it overall contributed to the mood of the show. As for the pacing issues, not having played the game, it seems like it was "fast" because they wanted to end the show with the Makise scene, to serve as a hook/twist. But even then, it didn't feel overwhelming, and all the important points were clearly presented. Or so I think, at least, considering everything I think I understood, haha.
Now, as for the actual episode, the main trio (which we got to know so far, at least) is pretty diverse and lots of fun while on screen. Mayushii is overall cute and adorble, although I don't know up to which point her behaviour could be considered "normal." We had that small/fast flashback scene where she seemed to be standing in front of a grave, and I don't know if I'm overthinking due to the whole regression crap in Fractale, but maybe there is a chance she suffers from something like that? It could very well be the writer's way of making someone cute, too, of course, and in which case let's forget I ever suggested this!
Okarin is just mad crazy, but boy does he liven things up with his CHUUNIBYOU-ness. Having Miyano play the dude is about as good as it can get, and his childlike personality benefits from it A LOT. I was cracking up at all of his weird mannerisms, with bonus points for the awesome "DOCTOR~!" scream and, of course, his habit of nicknaming everything and everyone. The guy who fixes the TV being called Braun is just too much. I cracked up because of that, haha. Last, Itaru looked like the typical otaku, but him being one of the only dudes who could stand Okarin's weird behaviour and actually best him when he goes into his weird fantasies was pretty neat. Besides, what's there not to like from a SUPER HAKER?!
Anyways, the episode ended up raising a lot of questions, but here's a major overhaul of stuff I noticed. Splitting this into bullet points because it's easier to keep track:
- Okarin clearly witnessed the satellite being delivered and it was completely fine at the time;
- First meeting with Makise for him, but it was clear that she had met Okarin previously and talked to him as such. How this could happen, I don't know, but it adds up to the whole inconsistency that seems to go on with Okarin's memories.
- Okarin and Mayushii are on the building after the lecture and you can clearly hear a shout in the distance. It was no doubt's Okarin's voice. Yet, it wasn't "him" screaming. How could this be?
- The moment he sent the message and everything went blank seemed to distort the reality which he had lived. In this time, we get the indication that Okarin might not have left Mayushii's side, since she saw him talk about "the organization", even though he remembers nothing about it. It was as if he had been unconscious and someone else on his body?
- In the microwave scene, it's supposed to work as a sort of time machine. At the "present", it is the 28th. Okarin inputted the number "120" when trying to do his stuff with the microwave. Coincidentally (or not), the fact is that "120 hours" would equal exactly 5 days. More on this on the next point
- Again, he is convinced he sent the message about Makise's death on the 28th, yet Itaru shows him the logs and the three-way split message having arrived on the 23rd. The difference between each of them? 5 days. Exactly the number of "hours" that Okarin inputted into the microwave. Coincidence? Probably not.
- Makise being alive, of course, is the biggest mystery right now, and how exactly could this be.
Overall, I really enjoyed. Lots of questions were placed, but you can already see a lot of different mysteries forming in the background. If the show is able to do a good enough job at linking all of them together, it should be a great experience. In particular with a cast as likeable as this one. Great stuff, I'll tune in next week for sure!
