NightWish is picky, the default vB style would fail his criteria for example. For one, browser compatibility would be an issue: it has to work with the most fundamental of HTML support and little to no Css so tables are particularly bad and would have to be removed (the entire vB design is tabular ). It also has to work with other non-desktop devices, this can imply some restrictions on the DTD, like restricting it to XHTML basic 1.1 which means, for one, any use of the style attribute has to go (it all really depends on which way you approach it).

But anyway, I missunderstood you...

What you meant was create a different deviations of the current theme. That is very much doable just that there would need to be a really thick set of rules for the nomination phase so as to filter out all the unusable eyesores that pop up (eg. myspace like designs). I can see it as a very complicated contest even with automation (of what can be automated). Simple designs with color changing and use of 3rd party buttons may be frequent, since attempts at creating small icons do not seem to have been very successful. The contest would also require a lot of preparation.
