I think they do fit into the mould as childhood friends even though they were very young back then. Unlike acquaintances at a daycare centre, their parents were friends and probably saw each other often. Furthermore, they had an engagement contract between them, which you don't see with simple daycare acquaintances. The contract is unenforceable of course, since children don't have the legal capacity to enter into contracts, but the point is that their relationship is most likely one with sufficient closeness back then to constitute a childhood friendship.
