Because only a moron would get in the way of a giant sword that looks like it can cleave a person in half. And only a moron would go out into hostile territory, not knowing what the hell is out there and without any support. I mean, here Shiro has Tohsaka with him. She knows her stuff. She is a good magician. She knows so much about Servants and fighting. But, Shiro plays the noble hero and goes out alone. Must be to prove to himself that he is indeed an idiot. And, as expected, he gets his butt handed to him and... woohoo... Tohsaka for the rescue.

Chill man, it's his nature. It might be his character flaw, but without that personality, Shirou wouldn't be... well, Shirou. It's pretty much expected that he'd be doing these kinds of things. After all, he did aspire to become an "ally of justice."
