I really dislike the KEY comparisons this anime gets. I may be biased since I like this anime more than clannad or any other KEY work, but I kind of feel like the shows go for different things.
While Ano Hana felt like a cohesive plot centering on the journey of overcoming personal loss, the other KEY stories seemed to be focused on screwing around for many episodes until revealing its purpose in certain arcs.
Basically, Ano Hana always felt like it had a point, a purpose to it even if it tried to hit sentimental chords as well.
