Hey, I'm an AruRan fan too. You speak for the whole community when you say that. Me, I like characters separately, then couples. Even though it's AruSherri, I still support AruRan because I still think they are perfect together. (And it has nothing to do with me hating Sheryl, I actually like her voice and dress style, plus her character makes me smile sometimes.) Bashing on a whole community is kinda low...

As for bittersweet endings:

Kawamori has ALWAYS thrown me for a loop in making his series. The only one he didn't do STILL had a weird ending: Macross II. It was like they knew exactly how Kawamori would end a triangle on average: choose the one voted most popular. But how they ended it... kinda reminded me of Star Wars. It just held no originality to it.

And even worse, in the series, Ranka is kinda like Ishtar from Macross II: an emulator for the Vajra. I did a double-take at this and yelled at Kawamori "you didn't approve of SDF II, so WTF!?"

He tends to repeat a pattern because he's afraid to break it and lose his fans. I think, if he went for a happy ending, he'd have 3 times the fans. But if he pulls another stunt like this... I don't think a lot more fans are gonna watch Macross series anymore. A lot of the Japanese bloggers that are AruSherri fans even said this. It was scary... to see so many AxS fans saying they hated the ending.
And they won... O__O;

But on a soft note: at least we can look forward to the amazing battle scenes, right? XD
