His situation reminds me of Golan Trevize from the last couple (in story-timeline) Foundation books -

The various human/alien/robot factions decide that he's the "normal person" who can best evaluate their plans and while he doesn't have to do much of anything himself, his decision will make the difference in which way the galaxy evolves. Wait, isn't that exactly what they said in ep 1 here? :-)
