Heh, you have quite a morbid sense of humor.
Not just saying that as a Flora fanboy either, I couldn't care less about Veronica, Undine, etc. but still wouldn't call what happened to them "comedic relief".
I also wouldn't really call Flora a total background character, she at least had those scenes talking/fighting with Clare before the main battle. I was hoping that would lead to something more but unfortunately the author chose not to expand upon it and just had her killed off.
